Take Flight

So this is a song I wrote when I turned 18. It kind of narrates my feelings of fear of ageing and then snapping out of it and taking life by the reins instead :)

Am I really, eighteen, already?
Don't know where the time went but it's gone
No more time for games, no more fun, no more songs
Gotta work, work, work all life long

And before I know it, I'll be twenty-one
Where's Neverland? I'm not ready to grow up
I put my hands out trying to stop the time
Of course, it didn't work
It's driving me out my mind

So I stare me in the mirror knowing what I gotta do
Paint my goals, build my dreams and make'em come true
Then I'll smile 'cause I know
In this race against time, I'll do me right, spread my wings
And take flight

They say the only certain thing in life is change
Well I hate losing my friends to change
But along the way I've met the prettiest creatures
So I'm letting go while hanging on

And before you know it, the year'd be gone
So get yourself up, don't take too long
And stop feeling sorry, you ain't got the time
What're you worried about? You're gonna be just fine

Hello + 'While We've Still Got Time'

Hello :)

this blog is specially put up as a musical outlet for me, in blog form ^ ^
my other blog, http://www.jessrockstah.blogspot.com/ is for my normal human being doings but because music + my music, as in the songs i write have a special place in my heart, i decided another blog was in order

okay so story of my musical life, i didn't know i could sing in the least till i was 11
tragic, no?

+ the first song i've ever written is called 'You're Not Alone'

i am so embarrassed !
i wrote it when i was twelve but now the song is, let's just say, obsolete

so yeah, i've started to live, breathe, sing + write music since i was twelve + i've not stopped since, nor will i ever !
on average, i write 2 songs a month, but considerably more when i was going through puberty
haha
i can thank the hormones + teen angst for that
so as i am turning 19 soon -frick !- i have approximately 60 songs now

wait a minute. that doesn't add up right, does it?

well, i occassionally look back on all my written tunes + if they aren't completely cringe-worthy, i keep them
but if i feel i've outgrown them, i usually say my last farewells + move on to greener pastures
you can imagine that songwriting is kind of like updating a blog
you always see your old embarrassing posts + always have something new to blog about
its the exact same thing . except for the fact that you marry the lyrics with a solid melody, find the chords + if you play an instrument, get an intro + outro just so you can say, 'i wrote a whole damn song !'

okay so really, i've written over -including 'songs' that really were just bit + pieces like a chorus or some sort of melody i fancied in my head- 150 songs
but my mentionable ones amount to about 60

today, in my first post, i will be posting up the lyrics to the first song of mine i entered the Malaysian Revival Songwriting Competition (MRSC) 2008 when i was 15, called 'While We've Still Got Time'

it was one of my rarer songs as it was about love + happiness, with a tinge of sad realisation
i wrote it when i was 14, based on a guy who's one + a half years younger than myself
i'll call him Cash :)
the story between cash + i is complicated + maybe i'll tell you one day, but just so you know, i've written about 5 songs based on this douche
+ we were never even together !

anyway, the song got shortlisted -yay !- + was ranked 18 out of the 20 shortlisted songs
on the website, i seeked out the competition + man were they good
especially Jane Sebastian's song which topped the list
'the Wait' by her band Free to Fall
it belonged at the top, no shizz

in the 'bootcamp' organised by the MRSC, i performed my song once while playing the piano for the other contestants + one or two artistes who were there to give us tips on how to improve our songs + arrangement as we were all amateurs
after i finished, one of the artistes who was the frontman of a local band told me that my song really reached out to him + that it reminded him of his own relationship with his girlfriend + how he should appreciate it

AWWWssss ! i was ecstatic but managed to conceal it ^ ^
i didn't get past to the finals because i didn't practice enough with my piano teacher, Grace + in the end, mess ups got me nowhere but down :(
however ! i thoroughly relished the experience + gained a lot of perspective from it + GREW !

i know i know, cliche + kinda immature in the lyrical sense but hey, i was 14 cut me some slack !
besides, i've gotten a whole lot better :)

i kinda forgot the rest of it

maybe if i get my hands on the video of me performing it i'll get it posted :)
